and other material was begun soon after the collection
was received in May. Miss Linnea Swendsen was
engaged by the Minnesota Historical Society to have charge
of this work, and she has attended to this in a very
faithful and intelligent manner. This work is necessarily
slow, but very satisfactory progress has been
made. When one considers that the shipment from Rock
Island, as just stated, filled forty-one large boxes and
that four additional boxes were sent about the same
time from Warroad, Minn., by Mr. Alfred Söderström,
consisting of material that he had collected the last year
or more and that the entire collection was made up of
a very heterogeneous mass of large and small books,
pamphlets, magazines, newspapers, photographs, etc.,
some idea of the magnitude of the task may be gained.

The Council has continued Mr. Alfred Söderström as
corresponding secretary and he has put in a part of
the summer and fall months in soliciting members. He
is besides constantly active in securing more books and
other material for the collection and in these endeavors
he has been very successful. As our Society had been
practically defunct for something like four years prior
to the recent transfer, our efforts to revive interest and
activity have naturally encountered some special
obstacles, but Mr. Söderström has worked with never
failing energy, and results have been fairly gratifying, as
is evident from the treasurer’s report. It is safe to say
that none but Mr. Söderström could have attained the
results that have been gained and the Society is greatly
indebted to him for what he has done in recent months
as well as in the past. Far more than any one else he
has contributed towards making our organization and
its valuable library what it is.
