One member of our Council, Dr. Emanuel Schmidt
of Bethel Seminary, St. Paul, passed away last spring
and in his death not only our Society but our Swedish
race in America lost one of its most scholarly men.
He was a true representative of the learned Christian
gentleman who is always ready to use his time and his
great talents in furthering the good cause.

After the experience I have had as an officer of the
Swedish Historical Society, which has necessarily
provoked serious thought upon its aims and the prospects
for realizing these aims, I am more convinced than ever
that our organization should by all means persevere in
its activities and seek with increased interest and vigor
to further the aims for which it was founded. The
descendants of the Swedes on the Delaware have found
it worth while in our day to organize a Historical
Society—the Swedish Colonial Society of Pennsylvania—
in order to gather, preserve, and make accessible
material relating to their history. Certainly we the
descendants of a later tide of immigrants from Sweden
should likewise seek to develop a profound interest in
the glorious history that our fathers have written. The
work of collecting material can perhaps not proceed as
easily or as fast in the future as in the past, but many
and large gaps remain to be filled and new material is
constantly appearing that should be added to our
collection. In our church vaults, pastors’ studies,
newspaper offices, and private collections is yet stored up a
vast material that we should procure and if this is not
done soon a part of it will be permanently lost. Our
society is furthermore needed as a factor in stimulating
interest in research in the Swedish-American historical
field, and in making possible the publication of the
