Dear Sir,
Aware how ready you are to promote any really useful
measure for the improvement of your countrymen, I ought to apologise
for not earlier having drawn your attention to the recently
introduced Infant School System which promises to be as blessedly
effective here as in my own country.
• You will, I am sure, be much gratified yourself, and may greatly
benefit a very important and decidedly good cause, if you could be
present at an examination of the School in the »Stora Barn hus» —
tomorrow at 11 o’clock precisely, as no person can form any
adequate idea of the system till they have seen it in operation with
their own eyes. — Pray, if at all convenient, endeavour to come,
the fact is, I do not like to see a good cause, the welfare of which
I have so much at heart, and for which I have laboured so ardently,
taken notice of and lauded merely by the Radical Press; for it is
by no means a Radical concern.
Excuse the liberty I use, your patriotism must forgive the
freedom. I cannot on any other ground claim.

Respected and dear friend,
Will you kindly allow me to escape the formalities of etiquette,
and thus address one, towards whom I indulge feelings of Christian
esteem too powerful to brook the restraints of ceremony, be assured
it is not impertinent forwardness that prompts me to it.
1 thank you for your affectionate letter which I ought long ere
this to have replied to, I thank you for the friendly »helsning» Mr.
’ Detta brev förvaras i Kungliga bibliotekets autografsamling och torde vara
skrivet till Askelöf. Datering och adress saknas. Tiden är det ej möjligt bestämma.
Brevet torde dock vara från något av de år, varunder Scott ivrigast arbetade för
de i brevet nämnda skolorna. Detta skedde enligt dagböckerna åren 1836—38.
2 Wingård var vid denna tid biskop i Göteborg.
