For European listeners there are daily programs in English, French, Dutch,
Czech, German, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. Each evening programs
are beamed to the south in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and on Sundays
there is a special broadcast in English for the Southwest Pacific.
The Voice of Canada is operated as a national undertaking to give Canada
a place in the field of international radio broadcasting. It has been operating
and expanding steadily since December, 1944. First used during the war
to serve Canadian troops abroad and to help counteract enemy propaganda,
it functions now as a Canadian contribution to world understanding.
It seeks to fill this role first of all by providing a steady source of infor-
mation about Canada and a sober Canadian reflection of world affairs. The
underlying purpose of all its programs
is to promote friendly cultural and
commercial relations with other
countries. The Canadian radio pro-
gram service which it offers is ex-
panding in step with the country’s
international responsibilities.
In its work of presenting a compo-
site picture of Canadian life, the
International Service co-operates
closely with the Domestic Service of
the CBC. This service was set up
in 1936 and has since extended its
coverage to reach nearly every Canadian home — a significant accom-
plishment when it is considered that the population of 1214 millions is
scattered over an immense continent.
Canadian radio has proved itself as a force for national unity. Through
the International Service of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation it
strives to make a similar contribution to world understanding and peaceful
co-operation among the nations. The Voice of Canada recognizes the
Canadian International Trade Fair as an important move towards this goal
and lends its full support.
