textiles and textile products; non-ferrous metal products; animal products;
chemicals and chemical products; and non-metallic mineral products.

During the First World War when the flow of supplies from Europe was
severely curtailed, Canadian manufacture was stimulated. More efficient
factory methods were introduced, and the standard of technical skills was
raised. The productive capacity of Canada increased beyond all expectations
during the Second World War, and the subsequent rehabilitation of industry
has resulted in the manufacture of a wide variety of products.

The “Canadians at Work” series, inaugurated last summer, features Cana-
dian men and women engaged in manufacturing, agriculture, forestry, mining,
fishing and trapping, as well as in construction, the production of electric
power, and in transportation. The program is heard on Fridays at 2130 GMT.

Liston Burns, producer of ‘‘ Canadians at Work”,

a half-hour documentary program illustrated by

actuality reports from factories, industrial cen-

ters and scenes of development in the news. Mr.

Burns 1s Chief Announcer of the United King-

dom and Commonwealth Section, CBC Inter-
national Service.

Program Notes

The CBC International Service
directs two English-language trans-
missions daily to listeners in the
United Kingdom. The time and fre-
quency for each program are outlined

on the chart in the centre of this
booklet.

News of Canadian and international
interest is broadcast three times daily.

SUNDAY COMMENTARY. Louis Beau-
doin, Professor of Civil Law at McGill

University, will present a series of
four talks on civil law in Canada.

MIDWEEK COMMENTARY (Wednesdays).
A weekly review of current events in
Canada and abroad, presented by
Robert McKeown, Ottawa, corre-
spondent for the Montreal Standard,
and Burton Kierstead, Professor of
Economics at McGill University.

Actualities and Interviews

CANADIAN CHRONICLE (Monday to
Friday). News behind the Canadian
headlines is presented by CBC report-
ers across Canada twice daily.

CANADIANS AT WoRK (Fridays).
Documentary broadcasts illustrated
with actual visits to Canadian indus-
trial scenes.

SPORTS REPORT (Saturdays). Play-by-
play descriptions of National Hockey
League games staged in Montreal.

Sports WEEK (Mondays). A review
of winter sports in Canada: hockey,
skiing, curling, boxing, bowling and
basketball.

Cross SECTION (Mondays). Gordon
Burwash conducts a series of four
interviews with representative Cana-
dians across Canada. Feb. 7, ‘‘Auto
Worker’; Feb. 14, "Steel Worker”;
Feb. 21, "Chinese Canadian”.
