your mountains would have rendered any new name impor-
tant.»
Jag kan icke i allo dela öfverste Burrards uppfattning,
ty jag anser att just den omständigheten att Montgomeries
lärjungar, officerarna i The Survey of India och punditerna,
sedan femtio år och mer kallat trakterna norr om Himalaya
för »The transhimalayan regions», gör det för mig till en
pietetssak att icke slopa detta namn för det bergssystem,
som par préférence ä r och aldrig kan blifva något annat än
Transhimalaya.
För att också meddela ett citat från den andra sidan,
vill jag här införa ett yttrande af en af de förnämsta Asia-
kännarna i vår tid, förre vicekonungen af Indien, Lord
Curzon. I Geographical Journal, april 1909, säger han:
»Alongside of this great discovery (Bongba och Tjoktju) I
would place the tracing for hundreds of miles and the
assurance of a definite orographical existence to the mighty
mountain palisade or series of palisades to which he has,
in my opinion very appropriately, given the title of the
Transhimalaya. This range has been surmised to exist
in its entire length for many years; it has been crossed at
its extremities by Littledale and by native surveyors. But
it was reserved for D : r Hedin to trace it on the spot
and to place it upon the map in its long, unbroken, and
massive significance... It is no mean addition to human
knowledge that we should realize the assured existence
of one of the greatest mountain masses in the world. As
regards the name which D : r Hedin has giwen to it, I
will only say that the desiderata for the title of a new and
momentous geographical discovery appear to be these:
1) that the name should if possible be given by the prin-
