doubt truly circumpolar. It seeras to take the place completely
in northern latitudes of S. polyzonias, from which it merely
differs in its gigantic size.

Sertularella rugosa, L.

This species is represented b}7 specimens from one station
onlv, that namely in Yugor Shar. That is to say, it is found
in the near neighbourhood of its known habitat of Barents Sea,
but no specimens were got from more distant stations to iink
it with the large variety recorded by Clarke from Alaska.

The Yega specimens difFer in no way from typical British
examples.

Sertularella tricuspidata, Alder.

PL 14, fig. 3.

This common northern species is present among the
material from almost the whole of the Yega’s northern course. It
is also one of Cl ark e’s Alaskan species. It is conspicuousty
absent from any of the stations where the depth explored
ex-ceeded 15 fatlioms, although it is recorded by Hincks from
100 fathoms off Greenland.

The most easterly specimens (long. 173° 24’ W.) are slightly
different in character from the type: the hydrothecse are inore
everted, and less immersed in the stem, and are also set closer
together. These features seem ali to be sharecl b\r Clarke’s
Alaskan specimens. This form appears to be Kirchenpaur’s
var. acuminata.

Range: Yugor Shar to 121° 20’ E. long. Variety from
173° 24’ W. long.

Sertularia arctica, Allman
(Qy.)-PL 15, fig. 6—8. Pl. 16, fig. 1 and 2.

A Sertularian, which is either identical with, or very little
removed from A liman’s Spitzbergen species S. arctica, occurs
from several stations to the westward of Long. 113° 30’ E.
The zoophyte is a little larger and coarser than AI lm a n’s,
and the main stem is sometimes slightly branched: but the
only marked diversity is in the absence of the constriction
described bv Allman in the middle of the gonangium.

Localities: Long. 113° 30’ E., 15 fathoms; 121° 20’ E., 4
fathoms (fragment); 173° 24’ W., 12 to 15 fathoms.

This species is very like S. albimaris, M e r e s c li k o w s k y,
but the hydrothecse seem distinctly longer and less immersed.
