First pair of pereiopoda without carpal processes,
meta-carpi strongly serrated; carpus of second pair shorter than
metaearpus, produced into a broad serrated process. The
epi-merals of fourth segment smaller than those of fifth. Inner
rami of second pair of uropoda elongate lanceolate.
Length 16—25 mm.
Hab. Off Staaten Islands (S. M., U. M.).
[The fifth family Paraphronimidae
seems to be restricted to the temperate and tropical regions;
it is however not unlikely that one or another of the species
may soon be recorded from the northern limits of the
ant-aretic region, as I have seen specimens captured as far south
as Lat. 44°.]
The sixth family Thaumatopsidae, C. Bovallius, 1886.
Head and body very large and tumid. Eyes large,
occu-pying tlie upper sides of the head. First pair of antenn®
straight, not tumid, few-jointed. Second pair rudimentary.
Mandibles without palp. Seventh pair of pereiopoda not
trans-formed. Uropoda very thick, prismatic, with distinet rami.
