Ørsted, Hans Christian (1777-1851), physicist, Denmark.

In 1820, the Danish physicist Hans Christian Ørsted (1777-1851) discovered electro-magnetism, the connection between two of nature's forces which is the basis for electric motors, generators, relays, and various instruments. Bell's invention of the telephone (1876) built on this important discovery.
