Craigie: 8kaldic Metre.
this metre by 10th century skalds are wanting, we can
utilize for our purpose the even lines of the poems in
kvidu-hittr, (viz. Ynglingatal, H&leygjatal and Sonatorrek)
numbering 328 in all. In these the same system is consistently
followed: if the monosyllable ending a line is a verb, it may
have any possible form, e. g. Vanlanda kom\ pars Frodi bj6*
at hdlsi gekk’y ept dvergi hl$6p) but if it is a noun, only two
types are admissible, examples of which are ef Agna her
and % odda gny. In Ynglingatal there are 7 lines of the
former type, ending in hrtir (2), her, vers, ntif, -aai, pram)
the second does not occur. The anomalous line dttunga rjobr
256 is probably corrupt. On the other hand there are 43
lines ending in a monosyllabic verb. — In H&leygjatal
(50 lines) there are 4 lines in hr6r, ~nesy -vols, -dag7 and 4
in gn$ (2), ftjfa, bruy while 6 end in a verb. — In
Sonatorrek (96 lines) the number of such lines is very small;
staff occurs twice, hrSr once, while a double consonant
follows on a short vowel in the doubtful word pokk 18s.
§ 9. The evidence of these poems is thus entirely
against the assumption that lines of this type end in -£.
Still clearer proof may perhaps be found in Egil’s
Hofud-lausn, which, apart from the rimes, is composed throughout
in absolutely correct fornyrdislag, and might well serve as
a model of that metre. The addition of rime has quite
naturally increased the number of lines of this type, and their
evidence is in the highest degree instructive. In the poem
there are 144 lines, and 72 of these end in a monosyllable;
with four exceptions (vann : pann : hann : fann) these words
have a short vowel or end in a vowel. The list of
substantives, 43 in all, is perhaps worth giving in full; to the one
class belong gram (2), ham. Mam, pram) far (2), mar (2);
gnat\ vet) fit, knit] lof, rof) brot, /lot) hlut} skut) Jj/ffd’, kvdfr,
