(Jraigie: Skaldic Metre.

jl I ± ^ x | J- Jl This problem must be settled in the light
of a remarkable fact, which is this: If the word in the
fourth place of a line of this type is a noun or
pronoun, that line can only be the second one of a
couplet; in the first line nothing but a verb can stand in
the fourth place.

What this implies may be learned by comparison with
the type of line already referred to (§ 12), in which a
monosyllabic verb, with long or short vowel, follows
immediately upon the first stress of the line, as in oss gein Jyor
of hjassa (see other examples above *)). Here the verb is
admittedly unstressed, so that the metrical scheme of the
line is J- — \J-^\s^ or practically jl^\jl^,\±s^ On the
same principle we may at once interpret tndlrnhriftar svall
mei&um as -^ | J- ^ — | J- ^, or practically 2’ | jl w ^ | s. ^ i. e.
in the absence of any stress a long syllable is not metrically
distinguished from a short one.

§ 14. We shall assume then for the present that we
have the following distinction clearly established:

First line. mdlmhriSar svall meiSum J. | J. ^ — | j. w
hrodrdeilir bad heilan ± | jl ^ ^ | s. ^

Second line 2). griSbitum frid litinn J-\J-^&\J-^

This being so, we see that a second line differs from a first
in admitting a secondary stress in addition to the three main
stresses of a normal dr6ttkvsett line. This is a point which
can be definitely controlled by comparison with two other
types which regularly appear as second lines and only as
such. These are:

*) The type is common only as a first line, a fact which naturally
follows from its being of normal weight, whereas second lines tend to
heavier forms (compare what follows with Altg. Metrik 100, Anm. 2). In the
first 28 pages of Skjaldekvad there are 68 lines of this form, of which
only 3 are second lines.

a) It may be mentioned once for all that first-line types may also
occur as second lines, but not conversely. This distinction, however, applies
only to dr6ttkvflett, not to fornyrdislag.
