here. The type also occurs in both first and second lines,
so that we cannot admit a secondary stress anywhere, and
this leaves only a choice between x — | J- ^ \ J- ^ and J- \
J-— ^ I -Z- w; that the latter is the correct scheme is practically
proved by the position of the first hending, which is
generally placed as in the lines quoted above.

The same scheme may safely be assumed for lines with
words in **ngr and -ungr, of which there are only 6 in
Skjaldekvad.

First lines I Second lines

26 urfrceningar drum 9 folkndrungar vdru

40 skcerybrfiungum skorfta 10 dbidingum svtita

33 gunndrunga sunnan

I 36 Upplendingar sendi

The absolute want of stress on these syllables is
probably due to the fact that the word has already two main
stresses, thus creating a tendency to lighten the termination
as far as possible. Hence these words are practically of the
same value as those ending in -adfc, -a&, -afrum, etc., of
which our list shows 12 instances, as 7 vapnundu&um sunda,
9 fdglyjafrra pyja, bldfjalloxan gjalla etc. (all second lines
except 28 hjaltugguftum hoggva and 37 husbunadi a hrdsa).
To these may with certainty be added 4 Ijdstmdinna landa,
and 6 bo&fikinna bragna, and perhaps 36 allsnu&ula pru&a,
37, fulldrengila gengit. The value of some other lines is
doubtful (as 10 allpakklegum blakki), but the only cases in
which a secondary stress seems imperative are naturally
second lines (30 drrqfngefendr vdru and 38 alldd&gdfugr
bdfrwn, both = J. \ JL ^ ^ \ J. J).

§ 23. There are two points of some importance for the
history of Old Northern metre, which it may now be well
to consider, as sufficient attention has not hitherto been given
to them. First, however, we may set down clearly one or
two things which the foregoing discussion has brought out.
