(Rekstefja). To this rule the exceptions in dr6ttkv«tt are
so insignificant that it is hardly worth while to mention
them 4); nor do any instances appear in historic examples of
fornyrdislag until we come to Sigurd’s verse (c. 1139) ok
glaftr grams son and 1var’s bitu sl6g su8rcen, which may be
accepted as genuine, though sl6g bitu might well be read.
Similarly such a poem as Hymiskvida carefully avoids any
incorrectness in this respect, and in some of the other Edda
poems exceptions are rare or altogether wanting. Over against
these must be set such poems as Voluspd, in which we
find en gras hvergi} ok tol gerfru, hdr bafrmr ausinn, seift hug
leikinn, 6tte mey gqfna, fekk s$]6ll spakleg etc., or
VSlun-darkvida where we have d$rt lin spunnu, vifr gim fastern, es
seggr dtti, beru hold steikja and so on. What this feature
of these poems may imply, we shall not enter into at
present; the question belongs to the general problem already
indicated. Here it is sufficient to point out that such lines
as vifr gim fastan do not justify the assumption of a C-type
X -^ | -*■ X for Old Northern verse in general.
In fornyrdislag, however, allowance was made for the
shortness of the line by admitting a type which
approximates to the C-form; a substantive could be placed
immediately after the first syllable, provided it had the form ^ ^.
In this case it regularly falls in a second line and has the
hSfuftsUtfr, consequently the word preceding it must have the
value ^. Specimens of such lines are i Skota veldi, sdsframa

are of little or no weight, as the verses in some cases are spurious, and in
others the text is unsafe, or has been altered by editors. Even if aU the
lines are accepted as genuine, the fact remains that the form is very
exceptional.
