Craigie: Skaldic Metre. 377

much less evidence for the recognition of this as an
admissible form. There are only five examples to be found in
Skjaldekvad, viz. 7 valbrands viftra landa, 17 bragningr rtft
i blofti, 20 vfgtjalds nc&rri skaldi, 23 sorglaust vissa’k borgit,
26 afreks veil pat’s jdfri, and the 10th c. verses in the
sagas are practically without an instance of it. In
Heims-kringla the examples are extremely scanty; apart from
proper names (e. g. Gunnvalds borg of margin, Erlingr fell
en olli) the following list contains all that I have found:

Gutormr. 97 valbrands vi&ra landa
$6rdr. 107 ondvert folk at londum
Ottarr 284 raundangs laun, pa’s meinum

422 siklingr orr en mikla
Sigvatr 444 bragningr rauS fyr breiSdn

510 skjoldungr hehk en skyldi
Bolverkr 547 mildingr, straukt um mcekis

570 leidangr brjott of Idcti
$j6ct61fr 621 lofdungr beiS hinn leyfSi
forkell 624 hundrad let i heitum

These few examples are not very decisive, as nearly all of
them are cases, not of real compounds, but of the heavy
endings -angr7 -ingr, -ungr. Only in the irregular Edda
poems do we commonly meet with such lines as those in
Voluspd, e. g, afrdfr gjalda, 5rldg folgin, harmflaug hattleg,
Uegjarns likiy veggbergs visir, etc.1)

From all this it is fairly clear that the types J-^\jlz,
and s^\s^ cannot without considerable reservations be
included among the forms admissible in correct skaldic verse,
although there was plainly an increasing tendency to use the
former of the two. The latter is of course regular enough
if the ^ forms part of a trisyllabic word (§ 19).

§ 27. While the facts brought out by the above
discussion seem to me sufficient to warrant the conclusions
which I have suggested as to the proper interpretation of

’) Considering the state of f>6rsdr&pa we need not be suprised at
finding in it flesdrott Tvu neqfa (124) and fotlegg purnis veggjar (17*).
