whereas if we take them to be -^ | -£ ^ | -£ ^ everything

falls naturally into place.

Some curious points are disclosed by an examination of

the assonances in the types we have considered in §§ 15

and 16. We have there seen that first and second lines

are differentiated by the fact that only a verb is admissible

in a first line where a substantive can appear in a second,

and I have suggested for such lines the values of -^ j -*- ^ ^ |

J~ kj and J-1 J. w ^ | J- 0 respectively. But the fact is that

this ^- of the first line, though necessarily weaker than the

J- of the second, was yet strong enough to bear the tending.

Take the lines from Skjaldekvad:

8 en veit’A at hrfr heitit
11 nu lsst’i at par \>rj6ti
29 gnyr vard a see sverda
34 Knutr r6d ok badhi&a
37 grefs leit viS met g&tir
40 pd r€d i bod br&da.

These examples, though less numerous than those in which
the verb does not contain the hending (as, lind sprakk i
rym randa) show that this raising of the verb to something
like full stress was a permissible device in correct verse. In
three of the above cases, however, this is helped by starting
the line with a weak word (eny nuy pd). Instances are
naturally more numerous in those lines which have a
dissyllabic verb (§ 16); of these the following may serve as
specimens:

5 par fellu nu foliar

8 frcegt \>6tti pat ftotnuni.

9 vel launa mer minir

10 fyrir v&rum par ijorir

11 oss hloegt’r pat eigi
rods leitar nu ritar

19 par gengum vir fcrengtrcV

20 freegt gerSish pat fyr&a.

In such lines there are two points to be noticed: (1) the
first word of the line is rarely a substantive, so that there is
