Prof. Storm’s and my own reading of the rather indistinct small
type above the line as z is confirmed by 21 r 49 (year 987) and
by 21 r 53 (year 986, addition at bottom of page) *).
As to the list of misprints which Dr Olson draws up on
p. 90 and on which he founds his estimate of the probable misprints
in my text, it is small wonder that he should have thought it
worth while to cavil at such things as a misplaced “ mark 3 v 13
or accents 7 v 9 3)\ in want of more aggravating arguments everything
was welcome which added to the length of this list: in seven ca-
ses it would not have been more than fair to state that I obviously
in several places of my edition, especially in the beginning, have
neglected the difference between two 5-types which are extremely
like each other and which I have described on p. 32. In short,
as far as misprints of any vital importance for the correctness of
my readings are concerned, I cannot see that Dr Olson has mana-
ged to collect more than one dozen altogether, his list taking up
two dozens. Moreover it goes without saying, that Dr Olson’s
method of estimating the number of my misprints by multiplying
the number found on three of the most crowded pages is rather
doubtful. The correct multiplicator, if this method was accep-
table, being 75 (number of pages covered by type), the result would
be 175, not 300 3).
But who can be bothered to defend oneself against an oppo-
nent who, in his demand for consistency, has no compassion? In
the face of the fact, that Dr Olson has not succeeded in detecting
any evident error in my text, it certainly goes beyond the limits
of his authority as reviewer to try to run down a serious piece of
work by scepticism 4). With respect to the unfortunate number of
misleading references in my preface Dr Olson might, with less se-
verity, have found out, that the small numbers at the edge of the
type, have been shifted in some places after the first (Munich-)
