196 Hollander: Jómsv. saga.
4. Another, supposed, omission of H. shared, however,
by 291 and Ftb., as against Arngrim and 510, is to be
explained in much the same manner. — In order to win
the hand of Astrid, daughter of Búrisleif, Sigvaldi the leader
of the Jomsvikipgs hits on the following stratagem to capt-
ure king Sveinn, which is the condition she makes. With
3 ships he sails to a place in Zealand where the king and
his suite are being entertained on his royal progress at
Yuletide. He sends word to the king that he is sick and
at death’s door, and that he wishes to tell him something
of supreme importance before his death. I continue with
H. 22, 37 : Enn er Sigualldi verdr uar at konungr er kominn
þa la hann a þvi skipi er first var lanndi. hann mælti vid
sina menn: f>a er xxx manna eru komnir a it skip er næst
er lanndi þa skolu fer kippa bryggju af lanndi ok mæla at
menn trodi eigi skipit sua at sauckui ok get ek at konungr
gangi i fyra lagi. en fa er xx menn eru komnir a mid-
skipit fa skolu fer far kippa bryggju. Nu er konungr
kominn a skipit. þa gôra þeir sem mællt var. Nu er konungr
kominn a skip Sigvallda vid xda mann, — whereupon Sig-
valdi seizes hold of the king’s person and sails off. — Thus,
in virtual agreement, H. 291, and Ftb. Now it will be ob-
served *) that they fail to say, at the proper place, as 510
(and Arngrim) do say (510, p. 49): og er kongr er kominn
med x menn a mitt skip sialfs, fa skal kippa feirri bryggiu,
er a fetta skip liggur; enn eg mun fa leita mier rads. —
But I question very much whether the omission of this
self-evident link in any way interferes with the understand-
ing of the ruse which is, rather, instinctively appreciated
at once. This would be entirely in accordance with the
technique of the Icelandic saga at its best, whereas it is
precisely the way of the non-creative copyist-interpolator to
fill in the obvious.
