13) 291 and 510 stand against H and Ftb in stating
the purpose of Aki’s journey to earl Ottar of Gautland to
be his asking the latter’s daughter in marriage. As Ftb
certainly is not to be suspected of abbreviating, this is likely
to be an interpolation — easily enough supplied from the
context. A is non-committal.
14) In another place A, 510, Ftb and H stand together
against 291, in which redaction a totally different story is
told about king Harald’s meeting with Saum-Æsa. A careful
consideration of this story as compared with that of the
other redactions reveals it to be of a rather suspicious nature.
— There is virtual agreement in theother versions and all
is excellently motivated: (H 9, 27) The king is staying
with Pålnatoki. hann var þar leíngi a veízlu. en kona su
var feinginn til þionostu vid konung er Æsa hét ok kóllud
Saúmæsa. hon var snaúd kona. ok þo vel kunnandi. Without
a word concerning his familiar relations with her Harald
leaves. Pålnatoki evidently is interested in her — she is,
presumably, dependent on him and without relatives —
and when she is with child he ascertains the fatherhood and
takes up her cause — incidentally making ”political capital”
of it. — In 291 p. 43 the king, presumably without his
suite, is forced by a storm to seek shelter over night with
a certain poor farmer Atli en svarte (N. B. the stereotype
name) who consents to the king’s wishes as to his daughter
(in Fornaldarsaga style). At his departure gefr konungr
honom goþar giafir ok sæmir han sva ok dottor hans. When
she is found to be with child Atli asks her who had fathered
it (which he is supposed to know). Instead of himself taking up
her cause (with the king’s gifts to identify himself) we hear of
Pålnatoki doing so, but for what reason he is interested in her
and her son is not explained; neither can we blame the king
for his failure to recognize her and to acknowledge his son.
