Hollander: Jómsv. saga. 209
retorts at hann skyldi fara, manna armaztr. 3 a) Búi’s
victorious fight with Jborkell midlangr, in which he is wounded,
but not fatally, and with Sigmundr Brestisson (who hews
off both his hands). He jumps overboard with the words:
yfir bord etc. — lb ) | >á dregz Sigvalldi ut fra flotanum.
2 b) f>a quad Yagn visu . . . [3 b) Sigmundr Brestisson at-
tacks Búi]. The scribe noticed his mistake and added the
little episode 3 b), hoping that the reader would insert it
at the proper place. It would be absurd to assume that
the author, or the scribe, for that matter, lacked the skill
to connect his ”borrowing7
7 more organically.
Positive Arguments.
According to Cederschiöld *) Cod. Holm. 7, 4:to was
written at the beginning of the 13th century, i. e. at the
time when Icelandic orthography was at its best, and is
praised for its correct language by him, Rask, Rydqvist,
Unger, and Vigfússon. Altogether it contains (now): first,
on the 9 first pages, part of the Konrádssaga keisarasonar
in two different hands, the first ugly, the other handsome;
second, on the remaining 48 pages, the Hrólfssaga Grautreks-
sonar, our saga, the Asmundarsaga kappabana, the Orvar-
Oddssaga, and the beginning of the Egilssaga Skallagrims-
sonar — all in a third, still other hand, characterized by
Cederschiöld as large and easier to read than hand two.
In his edition of the Hrólfssaga and the Asmundarsaga
Detter 2) has demonstrated that the redaction in this codex
is by all means the most reliable, though probably far from
the original. The other MS. classes are all shown to be
guilty of interpolations.
*) Cf. his inledning p. II. — Cod. A. M. 291 dates from the end of
the same century, cf. af Petersens, inledn. to 291 p. VI. The other MSS.
are considerably later.
