To these normal types belong also such lines as imunlauks
a hauka, mdttr krqfr morginbrdtfar, etc. Normal A-lines are
as a rule first lines, though of course they also occur freely
as second lines without difference of form. In A 2, however,
a difference arises in this respect, owing to the presence of
a secondary stress in the first foot; in second lines this
regularly gives -£ 0/, which in first lines must be lightened to
a..
&&) or exceptionally &
A 2a
ok gimslongvir ganga
pa’s ostirfinn ar/a
A 2b
hjors berdraugar fjarvi
draugr ftatvallar bauga.
The exceptional form o, ^ as in nvifr fdlkstri&ir Frofra may
be denoted by A 2 a* (using * throughout to mark lines in
which a long syllable takes the place of a normal short one).
The variation found in fornyrdislag, ^^^(-i^asina*
ski-pum ni&ri might be marked as A 2 f.
Unusual forms of A-lines (see §§ 23 and 24 above)
arise by substitution of -^ ^ for -^ ^, when the second
syllable is not the first element of a compound. The
introduction of this extra stress may be denoted by f, so that under
A 1 f we have such lines as.
afrehs veit pafs jdfri
mundit pann dag prcendi.
JdoSu hircttnenn pruftir
hinn es hvern vdg sunnan.
senn d svipstund einni.
B-lines.
In these the syllables denoted by ^^ fall in one word, and
the most usual type has a secondary stress on the first of
these (z, J). First lines, however, beginning with J- J- must
have ww only.
