respect. The following examples will show that the two
classes work out in exactly the same way as those in the
preceding section:

First lines.
ut heyri’k svan sveita
ver kannum skil skepja
stor fengum ben brynju
pew’s gatu sa slita
peir knida bid bddir

Second lines.
Gauts bragda spa sagSu
Jdlks moerar $k<e fosra.
stafns Gondnl Mut jafnan
herr Bngla US pverra
hdtt v&pna braJc mdtti

Here also I assume that first lines are J-1 a. ^ ^ 11. ^ but the
position of the alliterative letter and occasionally of the first

is clear enough that the first lines are lighter than the
second ones.

First lines with a verb in the fourth place are
comparatively few, but those which do occur confirm the
supposition that the verb here is quite unstressed, because a
substantive may then be put in the second place, e. g.

5 Bars nifijar felt’k bedju

15 moins grundar kvazk mundu

26 Bilds hattar verdr buttu

39 rahhr pengill hjo rekka

39 Svia tyggja leit’k seggi

41 jofurs hylli vard’k alia

Such lines are therefore to be taken as J-\J-^^\s^.

Lines having a pronoun in the fourth place agree in
usage with those which have a noun (see above); hence
fragt gerdisk pat fyr&a, hafa kv&du mik meifrar, einn
vis-sa’k t>6r annan represent the only type possible in first lines,
while for a second line we may have linns bl6da m6r godan,
erum heidin v6r reifri, pinn sk&li m6r innafij gnog dcemi m6r
scema, etc.

There still remains the type of first line which is the
counterpart of en tolf of glafr QyJfa etc. in the preceding
section, where the lightening of the first syllable permits a
substantive to appear in the second place, with another sub-
