As before, the metrical value of these lines is no doubt to
be set down as S> | -£ ^ ^ | -^ w. As a second line this type
is naturally rare, as in the bulk of dr6ttkv«tt verse the
second line always begins with the hdfudstafr, which must
be in a fully stressed word. Korm&k’s verses, however,
contain some examples, as til Svinadals ntina, en sjalfum mer
hcUfuy ef Shamir lief veitti-t\ compare also Bragi’s line vtd1
fyUi mer stillir.
§ 17. Up to this point I have omitted all discussion of
the e-class illustrated in § 2, where the line ends with a
trisyllabic word, as gunnreifum Aleifi, dSglingr vift bersogli,
etc. Prof. Sievers was originally of opinion that such lines
ended with X J- X (Beitr&ge VII. 75), but he has since
expressly retracted this view (cf. Beitrage X. 211), and
decided that the scansion must be -£ •*- X | -*■ -*- X. The
improbability of this would be very great in any case, as destroying
the natural rhythm of a dr6ttkvaett line, and in many cases
throwing both hendings into subordinate positions, but there
is one very strong proof on the other side which has been
quite overlooked. The type of line is not a very common
one; in Skjaldekvad there are only 23 examples of it, but
these are quite sufficient to establish a case against Prof.
Siever’s view. The facts are these. In nineteen instances
out of the twenty-three the final word is a proper (personal
or local) name, viz. Gunnhildar (2), SteingerSi, Vestemi,
