accept it as genuine, is Harold’s verse at Stiklastad, pora
murCk {>ann arm verja (Hkr. 479). After this, the type,
though always rare, was evidently reckoned to be
admissible, as the following examples indicate.

So far as dr6ttkvsett is concerned, it is clear that such
lines only become common in the latter half of the 11th
century. As regards fornyrdislag, there is of course the
difficulty caused by the absence of early historical poems in
this metre. The few lausavisur of the 10th c. shew no
example of the type, nor do the poems of Gfsl and fvarr.
In the verse by Harald hardr&di, however, we have the line
(Hkr. 620) nu liggr skru& vdrt, and it seems to me not
improbable that in this very line lay the metrical fault which
led the king to say that the verse was ilia kve&it In the
verse by Sigurdr slembidj&kn, of date 1138 (Hkr. 730) there
are two examples ok glaxfr grams son and vasa par gamans
vant, which are also noticeable for the position of glai&r and
par; the lines are, in fact, such C-lines as are found in the
Edda poems (cf. also line 7 pegn gladdi pegn with § 11
above).
To find parallels to such lines as these we must turn
to those poems of the Edda which are most at variance
with skaldic technique, e. g. Volundarkvida, where the
following occur: harm slo gull rautt^fjarri hugfta’k (FJ.fjarri’s)
vdrt land, es ver heil hju7 hold erumk rod pin. So also in
