Craigie: Skaldic Metre.
Hyndlulj6d, e. g. nu tak ulf pinn, aWs pat cett pmx\ etc.
The question of how far the Edda poems differ from each
other in this respect is too large to be taken up here.
§ 25. Similar questions to those discussed in the last
two sections arise in connection with the position of
compounds. We have already seen that a compound at the
beginning of a line has full stress on both elements, whatever
the form of the line may be, e. g. mdlmhrtSw svall mei&um,
dolgbands fyr ver handan, etc. We have also found that in
the case of a compound falling in the second and third
places of the line, the stress depends on the length of the
second element (§§ 18—20 above). We have now to
consider how far a compound word would be admissible in the
third and fourth places, i. e. to what extent such a line as
hoggum hjaltvond skygtfum (Egil c. 64) is admissible in strict
skaldic metre. Where this does occur, the line must have
the value of -t k,\j.z,\j. ^ and this further suggests the
possibility that even at the beginning of a line a compound
might exceptionally be treated as J- ^ instead of -^ -£.
In Skjaldekvad the examples of this phenomenon are
not numerous; in five cases the compound begins the line
(e. g. afreks veit pat’s jQfra), in 25 others it falls as in
hdggum hjaltvond skygfrurn, but in 9 of these the word is a
proper name (e. g. 19 Grendi J>6rleifr prcenda, 39, Ut rid
Erlingr 2) skjota, 40 droit sem Aleifr potti.) Setting these
aside as indecisive, the remaining cases are as follows s):
Kormdkr. 12 siftan gullhrings Friftar
Hlinar 6{mrft mina «
enn em’k audspong ungri
13 auffr acts jafiirogr troda
*) The possessive pronouns are specially frequent in this position.
*) Words of this type may be conveniently treated as compounds,
their value at the beginning of a line being the same.
s) I omit 24 nu hefir stafnval Stefnis, as resting on editorial
conjecture; Hauksb6k has stafnuali, and Flateyarb6k stafnualintu Some such
form is required, as mtiPfr ought to be read for nu hefir.
