The Relative Age of the Gautrekssaga and
the Hrólfssaga Gautrekssonar.
Ranisch’s edition 1) of the Gautrekssaga, with its weighty
introduction, has received its meed of unstinted praise from
the most competent writers on the subject2). Barring, per-
haps, his treatment of the Yíkarsbálk, they unanimously
agree with his results. In particular, his conclusions on
a matter to which he devotes himself with great energy:
that the (older, shorter) Gautrekssaga was composed as an
introduction to the (older, shorter) Hrólfssaga Gautrekssonar,
has been welcomed as most satisfactory by all; with the
sole demur of Finnur Jónsson 3):
”Når der i slutningen af sagaen henvises til Hrolf
Gautrekssons saga som en del af ’denne’ saga, er dette sik-
kert ikke oprindeligt, og jeg er ikke sikker på, at sagaen,
som Ranisch vil, er forfattet for at skulle danne en indled-
ning til den sidstnævnte saga”.
Even before consulting his learned compendium on this
point I had the feeling that, notwithstanding Ranisch’s bril-
liant argumentation, his results lacked all but a superficial
probability; but, the master’s doubts concurring, I was led
to seek for greater clarity in the matter. Even if the nature
of the material admits of no absolutely definite conclusions
it is hoped that the following study may serve to urge
caution in the interpretation of interpolations.
The chief support of Ranisch’s hypothesis of the priority
of the (shorter) Hrólfssaga is the Hrosskell episode of the
