the promontory. But Ftb adds: ver skulum ok hafa skriþ-
]jos a skipi hverju þyiat nu er natmyrkr mikit. Still worse,
in 510 he wants the lanterns to be placed i stafni a çllum
skipum! The wording of 291, skolom ok hafa skriþljos
undir tioldum seems to show that the scribe boggled at
what is no doubt a later, and none too intelligent, addition.
20) After the death of his father king Sveinn prepares
the arvel and invites Pálnatoki, his fosterfather and chief
thane, to be present. Twice Pálnatoki disappoints him so
that he must let the funeral feast drop. The third time,
the king, on hearing that Pálnatoki will come, reserves for

king’s seat to the door (and the less honorable seats there),
and then again (from the door) toward the (lower) high-
seat before Pálnatoki — who forthwith acknowledges his
missile. — Although extremely concise, the situation as
described in H must have been perfectly clear to an Ice-
lander of the older times. The account of Ftb and 291
seems to me much less so. (Ftb p. 164; 291, p. 59): hann
