204 Hollander: Jómsv. saga.
hall from the high-seat of the king . . . and then he goes
outward (to the door) alongside (?) of the lower seat of
honor. 510 here abbreviates for once, betraying, it may
be, ignorance concerning the exact direction Arnodd takes
and the terms útar and innar.
Cf. Gudmundsson, Privatboligen paa Island, p. 206 f.
21) Curiously enough, the order of the Jómsvikings’
laws is the same in no two of the redactions; but the dif-
ferences in regard to the text are trifling (allowing for 510’s
well-recognized tendency to verbosity) with oneexception:
no one is allowed to stay without the castle formorethan
three nights — Palmatokone inconsulto, as A, 291, and Ftb
(but not 510) add. This omission —if it be one — may
then be charged to H’s account*).
22) Having, through his dauntless fight with Sigvaldi,
proved himself worthy of admission to the stronghold of the
Jómsvíkings, it is said of Vagn as we might expect, H 20,
7: Vagn fylgir þeim i hverja herfdr ok styrir skipi ok
þikkir nu eingi jafnmikill bardagamadr sem hann. Ftb
affirms: sva er hann spakr madr at eingi sest hans jafningi
. . . ok þikir engi madr hans jafningi til hardfengi sa er i
hernaþi er, sem Vagn. The attribute ”spakr” for the im-
petous Vagn is surprising. It hardly fits him, whether it
be taken to mean ”gentle” or ”wise”. If he had been the
wisest, i. e. the most astute, of the company, he and not
Sigvaldi, would have been chosen by Pálnatoki as his suc-
cessor. For that matter, spakr carries the connotation of
sensible, wise, prophetic, rather than of astute. It looks
like an unfortunate afterthought on the part of the scribe.
*) The rather extraordinary additional law found in 510: ”eingi madr
skyldi þar i jomsborg lata vera konu nema nott” may have been suggested
by the remark opening the story of Sigvaldi’s laxer administration: H 21,
17: Sigvaldi hefir skamma stund styrt lógum ÿeirra adr nôckud breýtiz or
þui sem adr var. þa varu konur þar ij nottum saman eda iij etc.
