this”, which interpretation corresponds to Eric’s speech, when
asking his father to accept Vagn in Jborkell leira’s place: Ftb.
p. 201, 510 p. 97: pu satt pegar idag feigdina a honum.
(291 is unreadable here); and 291 inserts ádr — en þo
syndiz mer per adr brugdit. In other respects, 510 and
291 for once have the same text as H, so that we are forced
to assume an interpolation here on the part of Ftb (and A?:
attamen nescio quid, color faciei tuæ immutatus mali ominis
mihi præ se ferre videtur); for why should so telling a
stroke have been omitted?
25. A typical example of H representing a better text
than Ftb and 510 is seen in the following speech of earl
Eric directed to Biorn hinn bretski after the battle: H: 34,
10: hvat attir pu at oss sækja, gamall mapr ok hvitr fyrir
hæru. Ftb — eda hvat rak pig til pesar ferdar, skollottan
mann ok hvitr sem maskari (”young sea-mew”); 510 —
skollottan mann ok hvitan sem hnioskara (”touchwood”).
26) II does not contain the points of information con-
tained in the other versions, 1) that Bjçrn hinn bretski ferr
til bus pess er att hefir Hallsteinn kellingarbani (contradicted
presently by the statement: ferr heim til Bretlandz etc.), 2)
that six lendirmenn fell in the battle (and two afterwards,
as 510 is careful to state), which information is obtained by a
simple reckoning up of casualties, 3) (in Ftb only) that
Sigmund Brestisson stays with the earl that winter and then
proceeds to the Faroes, which clearly is gotten from the
Færœingasaga (Rafn, chap. 27).
27) The conversation between Sigvaldi and Astrid, on
his return to Denmark, bears traces of alliteration. She
prepared a bath for him and rubbed him herself. Upon her
sarcastic (?) remark (H 34, 23): Verit get ek nockura pa
