Hollander: Jómsv. saga. 205
i291 (p. 83) evidently is at a loss to understand it and
cautiously elaborates both meanings in a manner betraying
its late origin: Vagn er sagt at sva gøriz spakr madr ok
sidugr þar i jomsborg at engi madr var þar spakari ne listugari
en Yagn Akason ne kunne betr alian sinn riddaraskap en
hann. 510 p. 44 describes him aftir his admission as hægr
”gentle, easy to get along with” — surely a rapid change
of heart!
23) Ftb. and 291 dwell with especial fondness on the
events immediately following the battle, elaborating with a
number of details easily supplied from the context, or else
contradicted by it, e. g. Yagn and his men are not only
secured by one rope (H 31, 19: lét iarl þá alla setia i einn
streing) but have their hands tied to their backs; which poorly
agrees with the following deed of Yagn. Cf. Fagrskinna
p. 51: en hendr þeirra varu lausar, and Hmsk. ch. 41 to
the same effect. — The spoils are according to Ftb and
291 til stanga borit (”carried to the banner”), which reminds
one of the not too common idiom used also in the Laws. —
In H we read that þrælar voru settir at vardveita j>a; but
Ftb and 291 know even their names: Skopti ok Karkr ok
aþrir þrælarnir!
24) After slaying the first three Jómsvíkings þorkell
leira asks H 32, 23: Finni þer nôkkut at mer hafi brugdit
vid þessa syslu, þviat þat mæla margir ef madr hóggr iii
menn? ”Do you, perchance, find that I changed (viz. color)
(or, showed emotion) by this business, because that many
say (happens) when one slays three men? Then earl Eric:
ecki sjam ver þer vid þetta bregda enn þo syniz oss þer
mióg brugdit. ”Not do we observe thee to have changed
color by it, and yet it seems much is taken from thee”
(meaning that he has debased himself by doing this execut-
ioner’s work; (cf. Fritzner, sub bregda, (6), and the reply
of the sixth man: PI 32, 33: honom quez gott þikkja at
