222 Hollander: Jómsv. saga.
within the bitches. — And this vision he interprets as foll-
ows (H 4, 21): As to the portent that the whelps barked
within the bitches, it signifies that young men will be found
to take to speech before their elders and become so forward
that they will wield greater weight in councils though their
elders be wiser.
This may very well have been suggested by the Biblical
story of Esau and Jacob struggling in Rebekka’s womb
(Genesis 25, 22): ”Two nations are in thy womb, and two
manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels: and
the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and
the elder shall serve the younger”.
Singly, the biblical origin of any of these episodes may
seem exceedingly doubtful. However, the evidence is cumul-
ative, especially considering the fact that they occur within
the compass of a few pages in the Bible, the last chapters
of Genesis and the first of Exodus.
L. M. Hollander.
