Frihetstiden (Period of Liberty or Age of Freedom) is the
name used in Swedish national history and history of literature to
describe the part of the 18th century from the death of king Carl XII
(in 1718) and the beginning of the rule of king Gustav III (in 1772).
When compared to the surrounding times, this period was categorized by
peace, scientific and literary progress. On the political scene, the
parliament dominated over the monarchy.
