Tema Lunning Prize winners

The Lunning Prize / Lunningpriset

by Hans Krondahl

(på svenska)

Scandinavian design award, named after Frederik Lunning (1882--1959), Danish-born businessman and owner of Georg Jensen Inc. New York.

The Lunning Prize was established in 1952 to celebrate F.L:s 70th birthday and was distributed on annual basis during two decades from this year. The monetary value of the prize was US$ 15.000, a considerable amount of money at that point of time.

Every year two distinguished and gifted designers or craftsmen from Scandianavia were selected as recipients of The Luning Prize.

A selection group with delegates from all Scandinavian countries submitted candidates and made the final decision about the Prize winners for the year.

During the middle of The Twentieth Century the concept "Scandinavian Design" was a word of prestige in the marketing of new products. In this connection The Lunning Prize and the honored designers became a part of the image abroad for this concept. Via exhibits and intense Press coverage of the artists production nearly all of the Lunning Prize winners achived World-wide recognition. Several of the recipients of the Prize came to exercise lasting influence on the education in their respective field of designing. And still, in The Year 2000, some of the Prize-winners are active in their professions.
