Preface to the electronic edition
The Gokstad viking ship was excavated by Nicolay Nicolaysen in 1880
and this account in Norwegian and English was published two years
later. It has been digitized in September 2014 by Norway's National
library, from where the scanned images in April 2025 were copied to
Project Runeberg. We have white-balanced the page images. The OCR
text was produced with Tesseract 5.3 (nor+eng).
The preface mentions some contributors. We have not been
able to identify painter Harry Schøyen or H. Hansen.
Bound together in the same volume was also Ingvald
Undset’s Short description of the find, which
we have made available separately.
This volume was scanned by the Norwegian National Library,
from where the scanned images were copied to Project Runeberg.
We very much appreciate that they have made this possible
and want to encourage other digital library projects to
